Having a Coke With You

I recently felt inspired by the Frank O'Hara poem "Having a Coke with You". I had heard it read it in school, and then by a terrible actor in a shoddy teen movie, but never by myself. Initially the poem sounded like a narcissist's ramblings, carelessly mentioning his love at the end. But upon reading it this time at 1:30 AM, I was awestruck and moved. It clicked! It's about loving someone more than all the beautiful things in the world. It's about being so exuberant and excited about everything that you can't keep your thoughts straight. It bursts with joy!

"and the portrait show seems to have no faces in it at all, just paint
you suddenly wonder why in the world anyone ever did them I look
at you and I would rather look at you than all the portraits in the world"

"and what good does all the research of the impressionists do them
when they never got the right person to stand near the tree when the sun sank
or for that matter Marino Marini when he didn't pick the rider as carefully
as the horse

"it seems they were all cheated of some marvelous experience
which is not going to go wasted on me which is why I am telling you about it"
